Favorite Podcasts of 2024
Life is busy, especially when you’re managing a family, workin’ for the man, and trying to keep visiting hours consistent at the gym. Over the years, I’ve curated a mix of podcasts that keep me growing in every aspect of my life—whether it’s business/tech, health, religion or just keeping up with the latest news. Here is a rundown of my favorite listens that help me learn and feel connected enough to carry on a semi-interesting conversation with other adults.
All My Subs 👇🏼
There are four that I listen to almost every day and then the others – the longer forms – that I listen to in smaller segments; generally on my commute home or while I’m walking during a child’s soccer practice PRO TIP: if you have to stay at your kiddo’s event use that as time to move your body! 🚶♀️➡️💪
1. Daily Joy: A 365-Day Devotional for Women
For: Faith, Inspiration, and Daily Encouragement
Why I Love It: Devotionals, reading the Bible, and spending any time exploring my faith = ALL NEW TO ME. I started going to church after many, many years away and it’s been both a complex and beautiful experience for me (more to come on that if/when I can actually find the words). I now start my mornings with this bite-sized devotional where each episode is a short yet powerful reminder to anchor myself in faith amidst the busyness of life. I frequently find that the message trickles its way into action during the day.
2. Morning Brew Daily
For: Business, Tech, and World News
Why I Love It: I don’t always have time to sift through endless news articles, but Morning Brew Daily gives me the need-to-know with a businessey spin in a super engaging way. The hosts, Neal Freyman and Toby Howell, have excellent chemistry and a knack for puns which makes the show super fun for my nerdy sense of humor. I’ve been listening so long now that I feel like I’m starting my day with friends!
3. Fox News Rundown; for news with a conservative slant.
4. Up First from National Public Radio; for news with a liberal slant.
By now I’ve heard the same-ish stories from three different perspectives which helps me keep the echo chamber somewhat balanced. Admittedly, I acknowledge I hear more conservative than liberal positions on most things based on how the Meta algorithm serves me.
At this point – time permitting – I’ll dive into one of my longer-form favorites. Depending on my mood – or passenger(s) in the minivan 👦🏼 – I’ll pick one, but my most frequent next “Play” will be “My First Million”. Here are all the longer-forms that have resided on my subscription list for years.
My First Million
For: Entrepreneurs and Business Innovators
Why I Love It: There are many things I love about this show. Similar to the MBD crew, Sam Parr and Shaan Puri are a podcasting duo that work so well together. They also do some great interviews with successful entrepreneurs who share the behind-the-scenes details of how they built their businesses. It’s the kind of inspiration I love as I drive the Chrysler around town dreaming of my own venture.
Recommended Episode: From Non-Profit Founder To Building a $300M Pilates Business
This episode won’t give you the best example of Sam & Shaan but it’s an inspiring interview with Anne Mahlum who is a certified bad @ss and master motivator!
Acquired
For: Business & Startup Stories
Why I Love It: Acquired breaks down the stories of companies and how they got big—lessons that are perfect for those of us who are curious about what really drives success. Another excellent podcasting duo in Ben Gilbert and David Rosenthal
Recommended Episode: Costco or Starbucks
Everyone loves a great Costco trip and this will make you fall in love with the brand even deeper! And the Starbucks episode was a first for them as they added a third “host” in Howard Schultz, the company’s 3-time CEO.
Found My Fitness
For: Health, Wellness, and Science
Why I Love It: Found My Fitness with Dr. Rhonda Patrick takes complex health science and makes it easy to understand and apply. Dr. Patrick explores topics like nutrition, exercise, fasting, and aging, offering practical tips for improving your health and longevity. Each episode dives into cutting-edge research, giving you simple, actionable ways to live a healthier, longer life.
Recommended Episode: The Truth About Alcohol: Risks, Benefits, and Everything In-Between In this episode of Found My Fitness, Dr. Rhonda Patrick explores the wide-ranging effects of alcohol on human health. She breaks down the science behind how alcohol consumption impacts brain function, liver health, aging, and overall longevity but she does so in a fact-focused, non-judgemental way. I appreciated it for the “fact-of-the-matter” approach — like, here’s the info, do with it what you will, I’m moving on to the next topic, have a nice life. ✌🏼
Tampa Bay Developer Podcast
For: All The Deets on Developing Tampa Bay
Why I Love It: A co-worker of mine recommended this podcast after we were talking about something related to all the growth in the area around Amalie Arena in downtown Tampa. I think we were discussing how I was potentially the last person in Fishhawk who has yet to have a dinner at The Tampa EDITION’s roof deck bar. Lack of social life (and appropriate wardrobe) aside, it’s been fun to learn about the developments, the vision for our city, and the challenges of building so close to the water.
Recommended Episode: How Removing Highways Benefits Cities – Reimagine I-175 In this episode Josh Frank and Justin Cournoyer, leaders of the BLVD St. Pete project, explain their vision to demolish the I-175 corridor and replace it with a boulevard that reconnects the Southside and downtown St. Petersburg. Although we don’t get over to that part of the metro area that often it is always interesting to listen to historical perspectives of why things are the way they are…and this story of systemic racism isn’t one that warms the heart but is necessary to bring to the light.
So that’s plenty to chew on. I hope you’ll find something interesting from this list and give one a listen. I love my podcasts and hope this helped you discover one you’ll love, too!
